Abstract:
The "Handelsbanken" case is a complement to "Nordea and the European Market for Banking and Financial Services in 2015". The Nordea case describes the market structure of banking (retail, wholesale, investment banking, asset management) in Europe, events that shaped the restructuring of the banking industry after the global financial crisis, and the positioning and performance of the major competitors in the Nordic region. The Handelsbanken case describes the history, strategy, position and performance of Handelsbanken.

Pedagogical Objectives:
The Nordea case allows for discussion of: 1) the market structure dynamics of banking in Europe as a whole and the Nordic countries in particular; 2) sources of competitive advantage and disruption in banking; 3) different strategies that are viable to achieve long-term success; 4) the strategy issues that influence the scope of international expansion in banking; 5) analysis of a bank's financial strength. Handelsbanken is one of the most solid, profitable banks in Europe. The case prompts discussion of its business model which relies on a strategy that has not fundamentally changed since the 1970s in spite of the major changes that have shaken the industry.
